HS vs OS Seat Matrix (Home State vs Other State)
NITs follow a 50% Home State (HS) and 50% Other State (OS) seat distribution policy. Home State is determined by the state from which you passed Class 12, not your birthplace or domicile. IIITs and most GFTIs follow All India quota without HS/OS division.

Key Insight: Home State cutoffs are typically 3,000-5,000 ranks higher (more relaxed) than Other State cutoffs. Students applying to their home state NIT have a significant advantage in terms of cutoff ranks.
Female-Only Seats in NITs, IIITs & GFTIs: What Every Girl Should Know
To improve gender balance, the Ministry of Education has created supernumerary seats for female candidates in NITs, IIITs, and some GFTIs. The target is to ensure at least 20% female enrollment in undergraduate programs.
How Female Supernumerary Seats Work
Each academic program has two seat pools:
Female-Only Pool: Exclusively for female candidates (supernumerary seats)
Gender-Neutral Pool: Open to all candidates based on merit
Female candidates first compete for Female-Only pool seats. If they don't get a seat there, they compete for Gender-Neutral pool seats. This is NOT a reservation but additional seats created specifically for girls.

Benefits for Female Candidates
Female-Only seats don't reduce seats for other candidates (supernumerary)
Girls get two chances: first Female-Only pool, then Gender-Neutral pool
Category reservations (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) apply within Female-Only pool also
Female cutoffs are typically 5,000-15,000 ranks more relaxed than Gender-Neutral
In 2025, approximately 20% (3,664 students) admitted to IITs were female

Frequently Asked Questions
Approximately 45,700–46,500 seats are expected to be available through JEE Main 2026 across 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 47 GFTIs. In 2025, the total was 44,693 seats. The seat matrix is released by JoSAA before counselling begins in June.
NITs reserve 50% seats for Home State candidates and 50% for Other State candidates. Your Home State is determined by the state where you passed Class 12, not your birthplace or domicile. Home State cutoffs are typically 3,000–5,000 ranks more relaxed than Other State. IIITs follow All India quota without HS/OS division.
Approximately 3,500–4,000 female-only supernumerary seats are expected in NITs for 2026. The target is 20% female enrollment. Female candidates first compete for Female-Only pool seats, then for Gender-Neutral pool seats. This gives girls two chances for admission.
NIT Calicut has the maximum seats among NITs with approximately 1,145 seats in 2025. Other high-capacity NITs include NIT Warangal (1,049), NIT Surathkal (1,075), NIT Rourkela (1,060), and NIT Trichy (1,038). Newer NITs like NIT Sikkim and NIT Mizoram have fewer seats (300–350).
OBC-NCL (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates receive 27% reservation in all NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. This amounts to approximately 12,000+ seats out of total 44,693 seats. Candidates must submit a valid OBC-NCL certificate from the Central Government list during JoSAA counselling.
Top IIITs like IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Delhi, and IIIT Bangalore are considered equivalent to or better than mid-tier NITs for CSE/IT branches due to their specialized curriculum and excellent placements. However, top NITs like Trichy, Warangal, and Surathkal have overall better reputation and infrastructure. The choice depends on your rank and career goals.
Reserved category cutoffs are significantly more relaxed than General category. For top NITs CSE, the typical closing rank pattern is: General (5,000–10,000), EWS (7,000–15,000), OBC-NCL (12,000–25,000), SC (25,000–50,000), ST (40,000–80,000). PwD cutoffs are even more relaxed within each category.
JoSAA releases the official seat matrix in the first week of June 2026, before counselling registration begins. Candidates can access it on josaa.nic.in. The seat matrix includes institute-wise, course-wise, and category-wise seat distribution for all participating institutes.
No, Home State cannot be changed during JoSAA counselling. It is automatically determined based on the state from where you passed Class 12 examination. Even if you're originally from Bihar but passed Class 12 from Rajasthan, your Home State will be Rajasthan.
Top GFTIs include IIEST Shibpur, BIT Mesra, PEC Chandigarh, SLIET Longowal, and Puducherry Technological University. IIEST Shibpur is considered equivalent to lower NITs in terms of placements and infrastructure. GFTIs are good backup options after NITs and IIITs.
Most IIITs follow All India quota without Home State/Other State division. However, some state-funded IIITs may have special quotas for local candidates. Always check the specific IIIT seat matrix on the JoSAA website.
For CSE in top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal), you need a JEE Main rank below 5,000 for Other State quota and below 10,000 for Home State quota in General category. Reserved category candidates can get admission at ranks 2–3 times higher than General cutoffs.
